Gardening Graces  Newsletter

QUICK LINKS

  Hello Everyone!

Today is one of those weather days that you can literally call perfect!! So what am I doing sitting at my computer? Seriously! Well, one thing or another kept me from writing the August Newsletter and it's become a matter of now or never.

So what is a perfect day in my book? Not hot, not cold, blue skies with wisps of white clouds and gentle breezes, I suspect fueled by Irene, wafting over the landscape every now and then. My habit is to not let bad weather affect my mood, but I will admit this day adds substantially to the happy quotient.

While Hurricane Irene is being very good to Michigan, my heart is with those who must endure her uglier side. And we had a first last week when we actually  worked right through an earthquake!!!! The sacrifices we make to get the job done just further strengthen our character and resolve.*

I hope you will find something beneficial, entertaining or beautiful in the newsletter written just for you Gardening Graces Newsletter readers.

*Disclaimer: We did work right through the earthquake but were oblivious to it. Seems you need to be indoors when you're so far from the epicenter. But folks in Ann Arbor did testify to This!!!

FROM THE GARDEN

JAPANESE BEETLES UPDATE

They came but there seemed far fewer than in recent years. Yeah!!! We did practice the following technique described as a way to inhibit their arrival. It may have worked and I will do it again next year.

Here is the way that we did it and you can help keep them away from your roses, raspberries, climbing hydrangea and everything else they eat too. Seems they can smell when their favorites have been pruned and are drawn to the plant by the fresh cut smell. So hold off trimming and pruning the plants they favor through July and August and you may have saved yourself from having to look at the holey, brown leaves they leave behind on all your favorite plants.

 FRESH SPINACH AND LETTUCE ANYONE?

Now is the time to get some seeds in the ground so you can have fresh, organic, home grown veggies this fall.

It's simple and easy, just make sure that when frost threatens, you protect your crops with row cover. I guarantee you will have the most delightful salads right into fall.

I get the row cover from Gardener's Supply Catalog and my seeds either from Burpee or Pine Tree Gardens.

And please join us on Facebook by clicking the link in the closing block if you haven't already for more garden tips and interesting updates on all that we do.
