Hello to you all! Autumn in all its glory reveals itself in this picture I took today. And even though it's October 31st, it was warm as can be! Taking full advantage of that, I walked all over my yard in bare feet taking pictures. Cool!!

In Michigan we are still enjoying the annual fall beauty pageant.  A fully colored sugar maple on a sunny day can literally take your breath away.

Water Is Vital During Fall

I want to remind you all, to make sure your garden maintains vigor like the one above, to keep on watering.  Plants, from perennials and bulbs to oak trees and hydrangea, direct their energy into vital root growth in the fall. As soil temperatures remain warm, top growth stops and leaves are discarded. The process relies on enough soil moisture to sustain new roots and soften the soil in which they grow.       Sufficient water is particularly important to anything that has been newly planted whose root system is still small and prone to drying out.

Broadleaf and needled evergreens also need lots of water at this time of year so they are hydrated going into the winter. Once the root zone freezes, the plants cannot easily transpire, causing leaves to wilt and the shrub or tree to become stressed. Localized watering that produces a thorough weekly soaking of the these plants is the key.

Watering is one step you can take to help your plants not only survive the winter but be ready to thrive when spring arrives once again. Please call me at 734 482-8230 and I will be glad to tell you what you can do to insure a healthy landscape as we head into winter.   Gardening Graces provides these measures as part of our fall clean up and of course we will be happy to provide this service for you. But hurry!! We only have a few weeks left.
