This picture and the one directly below reveal a pond/stream that had gotten out of control and needed some reining in. We weeded, removed plants and transplanted some of them and redesigned the whole garden area so that the water feature was once again featured. |
Once we were done the pond and stream again showed their beauty as the main attraction of this bed.
|
 Pond/stream - Before |
A view from the front of the berm where the stream and pond are located that reveals the finished product. |
This was a long neglected front yard. However, it posed many obstacles: greatly increased size of the maple trees known for notorious surface roots that become a big issue both in terms of root size, number and location, persistent deer browsing and shade. |
We solved all these by planting deer resistant and shade tolerant plants from small containers with small root balls that allowed them to fit in between the tight areas of the numerous surface roots. As they grow, they will fill in and provide a completely planted living carpet of beauty. |
Another 'Before' shot of the problematic yard. |
Another 'After' shot of the finished planting that should resolve the challenges caused by the root, deer and shade issues. |
Look to the right to see what what became of a leaky fountain sitting on a neglected circle of weeds. |
We weeded and improved the soil and planted both the fountain and the bed below. We also added some river rock, egg rock and a few small decorative boulders for visual appeal and enhancement. |
Original plantings by the builder. Homeowners wanted to set their lot apart. |
We added a beautiful 'Royal Frost' Birch tree as the anchor to the design. This tree maintains white bark with disease resistance and burgundy leaves. A real focal point. We also added red Knock Roses for long lasting bloom and numerous other shrubs, perennials and ground covers. the landscape still looks great today, years later. We do yearly maintenance for this home. |
Homeowner was tired of the visual boredom created by the large expanses of ground cover. |
We cut out beds within the ground cover beds and planted them with colorful hydrangea, dogwood tree, holly bushes, etc. and annuals. This added the much needed visual relief and interest to this portion of the yard. |
A little bit tired and in need of improvement. |
We cut out another bed and planted it with hydrangea and created a pallet of mixed rocks and stone alongside the driveway. No more worn tire marks so common along driveways for this homeowner. |
Before and After IV
Overgrown and boring landscaping - Before |
After trimming back the overgrown plants, removing the unworkable and adding new plant choices that provide both color and texural contast. Notice the new center of attention, the ever worthy Japanese Maple. |
 Neglected Landscaping - Before |
This was a case of taking the essentially good 'bones' of the landscape and enhancing it with additional plants that compliment the existing ones as well as redefining borders and adding mulch. |
Original plantings had failed to compliment the front of this house. |
It required an almost total make over. Old, non productive shrubs were removed while some that still had good viability and form were kept. I don't believe in ripping out everything if there are plants that can be saved through proper pruing and nurturing. A new landscape was designed to make the most of this front yard. |
